The Mornington Peninsula home of the late Reg Ansett, founder of Ansett Airlines, sold yesterday for $14.5 million – almost twice the property’s most recent valuation.
The sale proceeds of the “Hollywood” style ‘Gunyong’ estate in Mt Eliza, which was sold on behalf of his estate, will go to various charities.
The 11.7 hectare Gunyong Valley estate was bought by well known developer Charles "Chas" Jacobsen. Jacobsen owns a major retirement village in Rosebud as well as a number of other residential and commercial investments, including a double storey penthouse, at Beacon Cove, which he extensively renovated in recent years.
The property was sold on behalf of Equity Trustees.
Bidding for the property started at around $4 million, but quickly eclipsed the $8 million reserve before being knocked down to a Jacobsen’s representative.
The property was sold by joint agents Marshall White and Crowders.
Ansett, who started Ansett Airlines in 1936, died in 1982 aged 72.
Australian Property Monitor’s ‘Home Price Guide’ recorded a 59.9% clearance rate for Melbourne last Saturday; a 53.5% clearance rate for Sydney; a 60% clearance rate in Adelaide and a 40% clearance rate in Brisbane.
Home Price Guide reported the biggest price was for a five bedroom home in Woollahra, which was sold under auction conditions by Ray White Double Bay for $5.25 million.
