THE Environmental Protection Agency in Victoria could soon be practicing what is preaches, by moving to a 6-star headquarters building on the fringe of Melbourne's CBD.
The EPA is currently located at 40 City Road which is part of the Dexus Property Group owned Southgate complex, built in 1992.
The EPA occupies some 5,000 sqm at the complex and its lease is due to expire around May next year.
Sources told Australian Property Journal the EPA is on the market and is firmed as a favourite to move to Drapac’s 200 Victoria Street project in Carlton, on the fringe of the CBD.
200 Victoria St is aiming for a 6-star Green Star rating. The former five level Carlton and United Brewery Laboratory site is currently being refurbished with an additional two levels to be constructed.
The redeveloped building will total an area of approximately 7,500 sqm.
An EPA spokesperson yesterday told Australian Property Journal that the agency is in the market for a new headquarters.
But she was unable to comment further.
“We have yet to formalise an agreement,” she added.
But there is a slight glitch in EPA’s plans to move to 200 Victoria St, according sources.
Drapac’s 200 Victoria St project is due for completion in 2010 – which means it could be six to 12 months before the EPA’s can move out of 40 City Road.
Sources said the agency is keen to move into a new and greener facility.
“They can’t get out in time and will have spent a lot of money to stay temporarily at 40 City Road.”
