A NEW 72 storey mixed use tower in Melbourne’s Southbank precinct has been given the greenlight after overcoming the City of Melbourne’s objections.
The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has given the go ahead for the 226.4 metres high building, 70 Southbank Boulevard which will nearby Grocon’s Eureka Tower, which has 92 floors and is 300 metres tall.
The Tribunal stated that in their view the proposed development was an example of exemplary architecture.
Only minor variations were required to the permit, which was first issued by the Victorian Planning Minister on 21 April, 2010.
Designed by renowned architects Fender Katsalidis, the building will include 532 apartments, six levels of office space, a fresh food market, café/restaurant, car and bike parking as well as several ground floor retail tenancies.
Two of the development partners behind the new tower are Benni Aroni, director of Stralliance Developments Pty Ltd and Nonda Katsalidis of Fender Katsalidis Architects, were also involved with Eureka Tower.
“We are thrilled to be able to announce such a significant new project for Melbourne, and one which will add to the amenity of Southbank,” Aroni said.
“We are also committed to making the building environmentally friendly, with features such as a large number of bike parking spaces, a car sharing facility and an innovative design feature – a ‘vertical garden’ of living foliage which will be installed over the car parking levels,”
