THE Victorian government has updated its plans for the Preston Market Precinct, adding more significant height limits and new protections for the fresh food market, after consultation with local residents.
The updated draft of the Preston Market Precinct Structure Plan was released after extensive consultation with the local community, after the initial draft was opened to public engagement in May of 2021.
The precinct will now have reduced building heights and homes overall, with the community emphasising a preference for open space and transport connections enabling easing access for pedestrians and cyclists.
“We’ve listened to the community and updated the draft plan in line with their feedback around neighbourhood character, open space and sunlight,” said Richard Wynne, minister for planning.
Additionally the updated plans will see any future development of the precinct including a fresh food market to at least equivalent in size to the current market offering.
This will also see the existing fruit and vegetable shed retained in its current location, with heritage protection for the market’s character.
“We’re ensuring the Preston Market will thrive into the future, while also providing new homes for our growing community,” said Robin Scott, member for Preston.
The plan has been designed to facilitate sustainable growth for the future of the precinct, with new jobs and affordable homes while protecting the character of the area and addressing urban sprawl.
The market precinct is strategically placed amongst crucial existing infrastructure including the updated Preston Train Station and the commercial offerings of St George’s Road and High Street.
“A strong Preston Market Precinct means more jobs and more affordable housing, on the doorstep of the new Preston Station – that is now level crossing free,” added Wynne.
This new draft will now be submitted to the Projects Standing Advisory Committee for approval and will be subject to additional community consultation and feedback.
