Gregor Robertson is set to become Canada’s new federal housing minister amid a generational housing crisis that has seen homeownership become increasingly unattainable in large pockets of the country.
The former Vancouver mayor will be sworn in Tuesday morning as part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s new cabinet, CBC reported.
Robertson, who was elected to parliament representing Vancouver – South Burnaby in last month’s federal election, will be entrusted with an important file for Carney once appointed.
During his election campaign, Carney pledged to double housing construction and make homeownership more affordable. He has promised to speed up municipal planning approvals and standardize building code regulations to speed up construction.
Carney also plans to establish a new federal agency, Build Canada Homes, intended to build new affordable housing on federal lands, as well as provide financing for prefabricated home construction.
While mayor of Vancouver between 2008 and 2018, Robertson established a municipal agency tasked with building affordable housing, which included the delivery of prefabricated modular units.
