HOME furnishing outlet IKEA is set to build its largest store in Australia, at Campbellfield in Melbourne’s north.
Planning Minister Justin Madden has approved a planning permit and rezoning of the Pipeworks Markets for a 41,000 sqm development.
Madden said that Hume City Council had requested that he call in and approve the permits necessary for the development.
“The new IKEA site is well located to transport, with direct links to Broadmeadows and Keon Park train stations, as well as the Green Orbital Smart Bus which runs along Mahoneys Road. It is also adjacent to the Western Ring Road and Sydney Road.
“This will be Victoria’s third IKEA outlet, with the Richmond store open and the Springvale store under construction,” he added.
IKEA had been working closely with the Pipeworks Market’s current owner to ensure an effective transition and to ensure any existing agreements are fulfilled.
Construction on the new IKEA store is due to commence in mid 2011 with the store scheduled to open in mid 2012.
