SIX years after acquiring the former Royal Women’s Hospital site, the University of Melbourne has received approval from the Victorian Government for its $425 million Carlton Connect mixed-use project.
A consortium comprising Lendlease, GIC, Spotless and Urbanest is developing the circa-70,000 sqm precinct with the University on the 8,000 sqm Swanston Street site, which will see the old hospital make way for five connected buildings and a public open space.
The buildings will include office, co-working, retail and childcare space, and student accommodation.
The Royal Women’s Hospital began operating in 1858 until moving to a new Parkville facility in 2008.
“It’s making good use of a flagship site, it’s driving our reputation as a world leader for education and innovation, it’s creating thousands of jobs and will contribute billions to our economy,” Planning Minister Richard Wynne said.
An estimated 3,000 direct jobs and 5,000 indirect jobs will be created by the project.
