THE long-mooted $800 million development of Perth’s Karrinyup shopping centre will begin next week, creating nearly 50,000 sqm of new retail, dining and cinema space, and 134 high-end apartments.
AMP Capital is managing the development on behalf of owner UniSuper, while Western Australia-founded construction major Multiplex will undertake the building works.
The project is expected to take three years to complete and will nearly double the 59,874 sqm centre in Perth’s northern suburbs.
New supermarkets, retailers and a 10-screen Hoyts movie complex will be introduced to the centre.
UniSuper acquired a one-third share in Karrinyup shopping centre from Westfield five years ago for $246.7 million, and has invested in the centre for more than 20 years.
“In partnership with AMP Capital, we will deliver new dining, entertainment and retail formats consistent with the fast-moving evolution of the retail market globally, while retaining a distinctive Karrinyup style,” Kent Robbins, UniSuper’s head of property & infrastructure said.
“The vision for the development is to respond to the feedback and insights of customers and the community by delivering a landmark destination with the highest-quality retail and lifestyle offering that merges both the physical and digital world to create a more customised and seamless shopping experience.”
The project will generate around 2,500 jobs during construction and subsequently a further 2,500 retail, support and management jobs.
Architects Taylor Robinson Chaney Broderick and Hames Sharley worked on the project’s design.
