FORMER planning minister Justin Madden has been appointed the new deputy chief commissioner of the Victorian Building Authority.
Minister for Planning Richard Wynne said Madden’s career-defining strengths as a team player compliment his experience in government and as an architect, he is a great fit for deputy chief commissioner with the VBA.
“Our building authority is always working for the benefit of building practitioners, plumbers and consumers. Its strong board will continue to strengthen the industry’s integrity and efficiency,” Wynne said.
Madden was a minister in the Bracks and Brumby government, serving in a number of portfolios including Planning, Sport and Recreation, Youth Affairs. His career as planning minister attracted controversy over the Windsor Hotel redevelopment.
Madden was involved in a scandal over the approval process of the redevelopment after his media unit inadvertently sent an email to the ABC, detailing plans to reject the application by setting up a sham consultation process.
A few weeks after the scandal and to save the government from embarrassment, Madden had no choice but to approve the project.
Madden has been appointed for three years, joining VBA chief commissioner Bill Kusznirczuk and chief executive Prue Digby.
