MAKRIS Group’s $500 million proposal to transform the Southport Spit into a hotel, waterfront residences, and retail and dining precinct will go before a Gold Coast City Council meeting early in December after the city’s planning and environment committee offered unanimous support for the project.
The Marina Mirage development application, lodged with Council in February after years of refinement, will include a 110-room hotel for which Makris Group said it is “in the final stages of an agreement with one of the world’s largest boutique hotel brands”, in addition a “limited collection” of residences, Australian retail boutiques and a “selection of world-class restaurateurs”.
Architects Elenberg Fraser came up with biophilic design, appointed to the project after winning a national competition.
Makris Group said the existing Marina Mirage shopping centre, and its recently completed 78-berth superyacht marina, is “still in full operation and located within the Spit Master Plan, which outlines a vision to revitalise the area into an ecological tourism, recreation and leisure destination”.
“The proposed Makris Group redevelopment aligns with these aspirations through enhanced public areas, and low-rise form topped with the iconic Marina Mirage silhouette” that will be lit up to support various causes and events, it said.
Makris Group was established in 1988 in South Australia by Con Makris, who expanded his portfolio into Queensland with the purchase of the Marina Mirage. Con’s son Jason is leading the redevelopment.
Makris Group aims to have fully realised the project by 2027.
