THE Western Australian government has put out a call for a new hotel in South Hedland in the Palbara region, after Hilton committed to open a $65 million hotel in June this year.
Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls wants to develop a hotel in the centre of South Hedland’s new CBD.
He added that the development of Lot 1502, a 3,472 sqm site located on Wise Terrace next to the newly developed town square, would help address the desperate need for more hotel rooms in the region.
“It will provide much-needed, high quality, short-term accommodation in the town, with the additional feature of retail and commercial outlets at ground level.
“The project, part of the State Government’s Pilbara Cities vision, will provide the successful proponent with the opportunity to develop a legacy building that embodies South Hedland’s transition into a modern, vibrant regional city,” he added.
Grylls said LandCorp would oversee the project; however, the successful developer would be encouraged to provide their own designs.
“We would like to engage the developer in the early planning stages to work with LandCorp on the concept plans and to draw on their expertise to create innovative and well-designed projects,” he said.
The Government, through Pilbara Cities, is committed to developing Port Hedland into a modern town of 50,000 people, and has committed $77 million through Royalties for Regions to the revitalisation of South Hedland.
In June this year the government secured global hotel chain Hilton and Ramtron Australia to open a new $65 million hotel at Karratha in the Pilbara region. Ramtron Australia is a consortium led by local Western Australian developer Rothchester Hotel and Resorts Pty Ltd. The consortium also includes well known Karratha identity Kim Loxton, Tang Weng Fei of Singapore-based Ramtron Oil International Ltd, and Perth-based company AYR International Pty Ltd.
