UKRAINE’S richest man and rank 148th globally by Forbes, Rinat Akhmetov, has paid a whopping $US222 million for a penthouse in London’s One Hyde Park development.
Akhmetov bought the three-storey penthouse for £136.6 million and will reportedly spend another £60 million on the interior.
One Hyde Park is one of and if not, the most exclusive residences in London. It is the United Nations for very wealthy individuals with buyers coming from all over the world.
Owned by Project Grande (Guernsey) Limited, the building is a joint venture between luxury residential property developer brothers Christian and Nick Candy and the prime minister of Qatar.
Project Grande said it has sold 45 units at the residences with a combined value of £963.5 million ($A1.50 billion).
There are 30 units or so remaining if any Australians are interested.
Akhmetov’s penthouse is an empty shell and was created by joining two five-bedroom 12,500 sqft apartments into a 25,000 sqft unit.
Akhmetov is the president of SCM Holdings, a major Ukrainian financial and industrial holding company boasting annual revenues of around $8 billion and has assets worth over $18.5 billion.
He is ranked 148th on Forbes’ 2010 The World’s Billionaires rating with a net-worth of $U5.2 billion, up considerably from $US1.8 billion in 2009.
