THE Western Australian government has initiated an improvement plan for the historic 29-hectare Claremont Showground, the home of the Perth Royal Show.
It said it will work with the Royal Agricultural Society of WA to “investigate, identify and facilitate a wider range of land uses within the showground precinct”.
The has confirmed in 2019 that the Perth Royal Show would remain at the showgrounds, although in 2021 the Royal Agricultural Society of WA accused the Town of Claremont of trying to force them from the site, following complaints about the impact of noise and traffic. The site also hosts music concerts.
“The improvement plan will secure the longevity of a showground in this location and allow the State Government to work with the Royal Agricultural Society and the Town of Claremont to progress planning for this area, ensuring its legacy continues for generations to come,” said Minister for Transport, Planning and Ports, Rita Saffioti.
“The improvement plan will enable the Western Australian Planning Commission to prepare the necessary planning guidelines to plan for – and facilitate – future development and new opportunities to help create a sustainable future for the iconic showground precinct,”
Improvement Plan 57: Claremont Showground comprises approximately 29 hectares of land bound by Graylands Road to the west, Ashton Avenue to the east and the Fremantle rail line. The Claremont Showground is located close to the recently upgraded Claremont train station, which is serviced by the Fremantle and Airport lines.
The plan also provides for an improvement scheme to be developed allowing the state government to progress and coordinate planning for the area.
