Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Corp. has paid $51m for 258 acres of land in Ontario’s Niagara Region that will house a lithium-ion battery separator plant, Green Street News can reveal.
The deal closed on Nov. 13, and the company broke ground on the plant the following day. The seller was a private investor.
Asahi Kasei plans to operate the facility, at 5088 Highway 140 in Port Colborne, as a joint venture with Honda, with commercial production expected to commence in 2027. The plant represents a total investment of 180 billion yen, or $1.6bn.
The firm announced its plan to build the plant last May. The facility will be the first of its kind in Canada and will employ more than 300 people in its first phase.
