AUSTRALIAN architecture firm BVN has been selected as the winner to design the redevelopment of the 125 year old City Tattersalls Club in Sydney.
BVN’s proposed 49-storey tower for 194-204 Pitt St will incorporate the 19th century building at its lower levels, to be refurbishment by heritage architects fjmt.
The project is being undertaken by a consortium led by Singapore-based First Sponsor Group Limited and ICD Property, together with the City Tattersalls Club.
Located a short distance from Westfield Pitt St, the tower will have circa 245 residential apartments and a 100-room hotel.
“We understand the significance of this project to the wider Sydney community and in particular to the 19,000 members of the Club,” First Sponsor Group’s chief executive officer
“This building has been part of the city for over 125 years to date and we want to safeguard its future for a further 125 years by upgrading its existing structure to provide even more benefit to the Club’s members and the overall neighbouring community.”
City Tattersalls Club chief executive officer, Marcelo A. Veloz said of central importance was how the redevelopment design would revolutionise the Club’s amenities for members with the addition of a circa 100-room boutique hotel and retail offerings that will underpin the Club’s ongoing success.
Central Sydney Planning Committee’s green light for the stage one concept development application of the property late last year broke a run of several years of previous permit hurdles. Plans for the site were re-lodged over 12 months prior with a project price tag of $270 million. The project partners had been forced back to drawing board when an application was declined on heritage grounds one year earlier.
The development group is now working towards finalising design details with BVN in preparation for submission of a stage two development application later this year.
Six firms were shortlisted for the redevelopment competition, including Australia-based Hassell, Bates Smart, SJB, and Candalepas Associates, as well international practice DP Architects, who teamed up with local firm Scott Carver.
