The Québec government-run organization responsible for affordable and low-income housing has named industry veteran Jean Martel as its new chief executive.
Martel starts at Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ) on Sept. 23. He is joining from Cogir Real Estate, a Montréal-based property developer and investor, where he has been a vice president of construction.
In announcing the appointment, SHQ touted Martel’s engineering background, as well as his knowledge of issues and challenges relating to the construction industry and the affordable-housing space.
“[SHQ] has made many changes to how it tackles housing challenges,” the provincial minister responsible for housing, France-Élaine Duranceau, said in a statement. “We have put in place relevant tools that give more flexibility and more variety to stakeholders to act on the housing shortage. The time has come to make good use of the toolbox that we can now collectively rely on.”
SHQ provides technical and financial support for Québec-based and international housing projects. At midyear, the organization had 40,654 housing units in operation and 10,844 units in the pipeline, including 5,093 under construction.
