THE penthouse occupying the top two levels of 60-storey Melbourne CBD tower Collins House – the third-thinnest residential tower on earth – is up for grabs with a price tag of $17 million.
Completed in 2021, Collins House at 464 Collins Street soars 185 metres, but is just 11.5 metres wide. It was designed by architects Bates Smart and built by Hickory, and integrates Melbourne’s historic Maker’s Mark façade, showcasing Art Nouveau detailing.
Offering views of Collins Street, Port Phillip Bay, and the Dandenong Ranges, the penthouse spans 480 metres across levels 56 and 57, and was imagined by Cox Architecture and interior designer George Livissianis.
It features a circular sculptural staircase that has been painstakingly hand-clad with thousands of layers of timber. By placing the structure in the walls, Hickory created a single-span space in the living area, the largest in any apartment in Australia.
Extravagant design elements include a handcrafted sculptural staircase, a mirrored corridor with 600-kilogra German pivot doors, and a grand open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space centred around a 5.5-metre Rochelle Grey marble island.
The penthouse also boasts state-of-the-art home automation, a climate-controlled wine cellar, and a Dale Frank painting that needed to be craned in before the top level was completed.
The lower level features bluestone flooring, exposed concrete, steel accents and Italian feature marble, while the upper level offers ocean travertine and a lush retreat with an outdoor terrace with barbecue, a heated jacuzzi and panoramic city views.
Nancy Monitto of Colliers Residential Victoria, which has the listing, said, “This is without doubt one of the finest offerings in Australia.
“It will be highly contested not just from a local audience but interstate and internationally. It will be an enviable lifestyle, whether full-time living or a secondary residence in Melbourne.”
Monitto said the penthouse is a trophy for an Australian with a high net worth or an expat.
“We are anticipating strong interest in this asset as the luxury market within this segment is solid, and we have transacted many trophy assets of this calibre to clients across the eastern seaboard of Australia with no mortgages.”
Valuers reported demand as being strongest for houses valued up to $10 million and those between $10 million to $20 million, according to CBRE’s latest Prestige Residential Valuer Insights.
“Apartments like this don’t come to market often, and it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure a residential masterpiece in a prime CBD address,” Monitto said.
