THE Al Habtoor Leighton Group has been awarded a $1.2 billion contract for the design and construction of the new Paris Sorbonne University campus at Al Reem Island in Abu Dhabi for Mubadala Development Company.
The project will be undertaken by the group’s Al Habtoor Engineering Abu Dhabi division in joint venture with Murray and Roberts.
The project involves the design and construction of a 93,000 sqm educational facility on a greenfield site to be completed in two distinct phases, allowing opening and operational usage of the establishment (one lecture wing and associated facilities) within 16 months, with the remainder following 12 months later.
The academic buildings consists of a central circular plaza with an iconic 25 metre tall domed cupola, complementing the original Paris-Sorbonne University tower, with two lecture wings, library, auditorium, administrative building and dining hall radiating out from the central plaza area.
Construction of the project will commence immediately and be completed in two stages. Stage One will be completed in August next year, and Stage Two in August 2010.
