MYER has set its sights on cashed up Queenslanders, yesterday unveiling plans for three new department stores.
Myer plans to open three metropolitan and regional stores at Mt Gravatt, Robina and Mackay, this is in addition to the mooted Townsville in 2011 and Northlakes department store which will open next month.
The Mackay store is expected to open in 2011 at Lend Lease’s Caneland Central.
The Mt Gravatt store will open at Westfield’s Garden City, whilst the Robina Store will be at the QIC Real Estate owned Robina Town Centre – both expected to open in 2010.
The Robina store will be the region’s second department store, a newly refurbished David Jones store will open in November this year.
Myer’s chief executive Bernie Brookes said the retailer also expects to announce a fourth new QLD store in the coming weeks which will see Myer open more stores in the Sunshine State than any other state in Australia.
“Customers in Queensland will have greater access to the unique range of brands that we offer as an international class retail business, and we are delighted to be announcing three new stores in key demographic areas,” he added.
QLD Treasurer Andrew Fraser the announcement is a vote of confidence in the strength of the Queensland economy.
“While interest rates have blunted demand, this proves that the long term future remains bright,” he added.
The stores will measure between 10,000 to 12,500 sqm and increases the retailer’s portfolio from 63 to 80 stores across Australia, as it positions itself to become a $5 billion company.
