CHANGES proposed by the City of South Perth will significantly harm the ability of Perth’s new planning system to deliver infill housing development and community infrastructure, according to the Property Council.
The Property Council has written to the City of South Perth to reject Town Planning Scheme Amendment 46.
Executive director Joe Lenzo said the amendment will cause significant economic harm to a number of businesses with significant commitments to invest in South Perth based on a clearly articulated existing Town Planning Scheme, which was thoroughly considered and consulted in the industry and community.
“South Perth has been perceived as a leader in orderly planning and infill development, and Amendment 46 will set a poor example to other councils that are struggling to achieve their infill housing targets.
“The proposed Amendment 46 would remove 16% of land development in South Perth while putting significant restrictions on building heights. This would threaten more than $240 million in direct construction investment costing an estimated 8000 direct and indirect jobs,” Lenzo said.
“The amendment also represents a major reversal of Perth’s orderly planning framework outlined in Perth and Peel @ 3.5million, which will have a significant negative flow-on effect in the broad metropolitan area,” he added.
“South Perth has a real opportunity to improve its connections with the CBD, increase its population and boost the local economy, the local government is crazy to jeopardize that with the proposed amendment 46,” Lenzo said.
