MILLIONAIRE art collector and professional gambler David Walsh has unveiled plans for a new $300 million five-star hotel named HOMO on the Mona museum’s Berriedale site.
Walsh unveiled the new 172-room hotel *at a Tourism Council of Tasmania lunch.
Designed by architect Nonda Katsalidis, the new development will feature a high roller casino, a spa treatment centre, concert stage and an indoor theatre; a conference centre and a caravan park with 34 sites.
Walsh said HoMo at Mona will cost $300 million and create 300 jobs during three years of construction and 120 ongoing jobs once opened.
The Hobart hotel market is booming, having overtaken Perth as the third best performer in Australia, behind Sydney and Melbourne, according Deloitte Access Economics.
As a result, major players are flocking to the capital of the Apple Isle, attracting budget tourists and well heeled guests.
Singaporean billionaire James Koh’s Fragrance Group is opening his first hotel project, the Ibis Styles Hobart.
The group is also seeking approval for a new 126 metre, 400 rooms hotel at 28 – 30 Davey St and 83 metre 495 rooms hotel at 2-6 Collins St, both valued at $250 million.
Hobart was also the first Australian city selected by the world’s largest hotelier, Marriott, to debut its “The Luxury Collection” property.
Marriott along with Alan and Carol Schwartz’s Trawalla Group are redeveloping the heritage buildings in Parliament Square into a new prestige hotel.
Scheduled to open in 2018, The Luxury Collection Hobart will comprise 128 rooms, an upscale restaurant, lobby lounge, and whiskey bar.
The Hobart hotel will join Marriott’s growing list of luxury hotels in Australia, including The Ritz-Carlton Perth, The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne, and the highly anticipated W Brisbane.
