The Durham Catholic District School Board has acquired almost 17 acres of land in Oshawa, Ont., for $43.3m, Green Street News can reveal.
The land, near the corner of Harmony Road and Greenhill Avenue, was bought from a private owner on Jan. 15. The price works out to nearly $2.6m/acre.
A new high school will be constructed on the site, the address of which will be 1001 Greenhill Avenue.
The school appears to be behind schedule. Initial plans were unveiled in 2021 and construction was slated to go tender in 2022. The school board’s most recent Long-Term Accommodation Plan said the tender and construction of the school were slated for 2024 to 2026, pending various approvals.
Oshawa, 54 km east of downtown Toronto, has seen steady growth over the past 20 years. The population surpassed 175,000 as of the 2021 census, up from roughly 142,000 in 2006.
The site is surrounded by new housing developments and is 4 km to the nearest Highway 407 onramp. When plans for the school were first unveiled, almost 12,000 homes were slated for development in the area.
This wasn’t the city’s only land deal to take place recently. On Dec. 18, a 4-acre site in southern Oshawa traded for $5.4m, or about $1.4m/acre.
