QINGNAN Wen, the largest importer of Australian wool into China, has picked up the 2,439-hectare heritage listed Mawallok estate and sheep station near Beaufort that was listed in October with hopes of over $25 million.
The Mitchell family had owned Mawallok since 1980. They bought the property from the Russell family which had settled the land 133 years earlier.
Mawallok has a carrying capacity of 30,000 dry sheep equivalents and features a 10-bedroom Arts and Crafts style homestead, English gardens and a 10 hectare lake designed by Sir John Monash.
Improvements also include a five bedroom manager’s residence, staff cottages, bluestone stables, and coach house, a 12-bedroom shearers’ quarters, and sheds and yards.
A 231-megalitre irrigation entitlement also formed part of the offering.
Located at 3594 Geelong Rd in Stockyard Hill, Mawallok and has been utilised by the Stephen Mitchell – chairman of ASX-listed Indago Energy – and wife Serena for wool, prime lambs, cattle and cropping under Mawallok Pastoral Company.
Elfers sold the property after its first public offering since 1847.
Wen, owner of Jiangsu-based Tianyu Wool, bought the 2,000 hectare Lal Lal Estate near Ballarat in 2014 for $20 million.
