Lendlease has been appointed to deliver The Fox: NGV Contemporary project in Melbourne’s Southbank.
Development Victoria awarded the contract to construct the 30,000 sq m gallery, with 13,000 sq m dedicated for art and design displays.
The property will also include a dual-levelled rooftop terrace, café, public parkland, sculpture garden and NGV design store.
Construction is expected to commence in March 2025.
“Our experienced and collaborative team will work alongside the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation, Creative Victoria, Development Victoria, and the exceptional design team led by Angelo Candalepas to create a celebrated, city-shaping cultural landmark that will create a new global destination for the arts,” said Bill Alexandrakis, executive general manager for construction – Victoria at Lendlease.
Australian architectural firm Angelo Candalepas and Associates unveiled the building’s design in 2022.
The site was a former Carlton United Breweries building at Southbank Boulevard, with the property being deconstructed in 2024.
The gallery is part of the Victorian government’s $1.7bn overhaul of the Melbourne Arts Precinct, with Lendlease also delivering works on the Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre and part of the 18,000 sq m Laak Boorndap garden.
