QUEENSLAND'S Campbell Government has called for keen developers to submit an expression of interest for the multi-billion dollar Broadwater Marine Project on the Gold Coast.
The EOI seeks delivery of a cruise ship terminal as part of an integrated tourism development on state government-owned land on the Spit or on Wavebreak Island.
The integrated development could include hotel, casino, marina and super yacht facilities, retail, entertainment, hospitality, community open space and recreation facilities and a mix of residential development.
QLD Deputy Premier and Infrastructure Minister Jeff Seeney said project proposals should be exciting – yet feasible, viable and deliverable.
EOI submissions close on 31 January 2013 after which a shortlist will be determined with the announcement of a successful bidder by around mid-2013.
The Broadwater Marine Project is a joint initiative of the state government and Gold Coast City Council, seeking private sector investment to deliver what could be the largest piece of integrated tourism infrastructure developed in QLD’s history.
The government estimates that project will inject overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion to the economy by 2020.
A Gold Coast cruise ship terminal was mooted in 2005 with a subsequent Environmental Impact Statement stating it was not feasible at that time due to high cost of construction with minimal benefits.
