A MANSION in the blue-ribbon suburb of Toorak has become the most expensive house ever sold in Melbourne, fetching more than $24 million.
The property at 4 Robertson St was sold by Marshall White agent Marcus Chiminello on behalf of Tony and Jennifer Smorgon, part of the renowned Smorgon business dynasty.
It trumps the $24 million paid by property magnate Harry Stamoulis for the former Baillieu family home at 39 St Georges Rd, also in Toorak, in 2010, which Stamoulis demolished to build in favour of a new mansion.
The house was designed by architect Russell Casper with consultant architect Andy Skurman and completed in in early 2012.
It includes seven bedrooms, three kitchens, a large dining room, formal sitting rooms and a den for business meetings.
The grounds include a 25-metre pool and spa.
The Victorian record remains the $26 million sale of the clifftop Portsea manor Ilyuka in 2010.
