RMIT University has leased more than 10,600 sqm within Dexus’ 222 Lonsdale Street in Melbourne’s CBD for administration and office requirements on a 15-year deal.
The deal takes in levels 5, 6 and 7 and will commence from March 2020, and Dexus will undertake refurbishment and upgrades to fit-out and amenities.
Current tenant Sensis will move out with the expiry of its lease in July 2019. RMIT had extended its lease over three levels at 171 La Trobe Street until the end of 2019 during last year, and taken up extra space.
The university will move into large campus-style floor space and have access to on-site amenity including childcare, a gymnasium and a medical centre.
The building is close to the main RMIT campus facilities in CBD’s north, as well as city loop trains and new Metro Rail project currently under construction, and a tram route that links surrounding RMIT locations.
“We are pleased to expand our customer relationship with RMIT, and satisfy the needs of a leader in the education sector by delivering a new head office location for their administrative operations,” Dexus head of office portfolio, Ellie Schwab said.
“Customer demand from the education sector is strong as Melbourne’s status as the most liveable city in Australia and relative affordability compared to Sydney continues to attract local and international students,” he added.
RMIT executive director property services, Chris Hewison said the lease would enable the university to bring together key teams in its operations portfolio into one office location, encouraging collaboration and strengthening how it works across business units.
