THE property industry has welcomed the creation of the Industrial Lands Authority (ILA) in Western Australia. At the same time, the government has rezoned 449ha of rural land to industrial in West Mundijong.
Premier Mark McGowan said ILA will be aimed at fast-tracking industrial development and streamlining approvals for major employment projects.
The ILA will oversee LandCorp’s existing general and strategic industrial areas across WA, including, among others, Crossroads Industrial in Forrestdale, Gap Ridge Industrial in Karratha, Meridian Park in Neerabup and Peel Business Park in Nambeelup.
“The challenge I have set the ILA is to find ways to stimulate more job-creating projects and to ensure that there is enough development-ready land to service our needs in the future.” McGowan said.
Meanwhile the government has rezoned land in West Mundijong to facilitate a future industrial development in the area.
The strategically located industrial area is adjacent to a freight rail line and major roads, making it a key long-term link to the inner harbour and future outer harbour.
The Property Council welcomed the announcement and has called on the new agency to review WA’s industrial lands strategy, which it said is almost 10 years old.
“Now that the ILA is in place the property industry is looking for better integration of WA’s industrial land planning with other major state programs like Westport, WA’s freight logistics planning and the promised Infrastructure WA,” PCA WA executive director Lino Iacomella said.
“The industrial land strategy is almost 10 years old, but it has always struggled to get high-level support in government for infrastructure to support the strategy’s goals of ensuring supplies of suitably serviced industrial land for the needs of industry.
“The creation of the ILA is an opportunity to refocus the industrial land strategy for the needs of industry after the mining boom.
“The announcement of the approval for rezoning of 449ha of rural land in West Mundijong to industrial is a good start for the ILA.” Iacomella said.
