MORE than 5,500 new homes will be built in western Sydney’s Melrose Park North after the NSW state government approved plans for a new urban centre.
The finalisation of the new 28-hectare precinct as part of the Melrose Park North Planning Proposal will also deliver open space, land for a new school site, and retail services, and create more than 1,900 jobs.
Acting Deputy Secretary, Planning and Land Use Strategy at the Department of Planning and Environment, Amanda Harvey said the new 28-hectare precinct will be vital in helping to meet the housing and urban infrastructure needs of a rapidly growing area of the city.
The proposal will be supported by the delivery of critical transport infrastructure, including the development of a new bridge connecting residents in Melrose Park North to the future Olympic Park Metro Station as part of Parramatta Light Rail Stage Two. The state government is putting more than $600 million – including $26.2 million in FY23 – into the second stage works and bridge crossing.
Road upgrades have also been earmarked for intersections on Victoria Road and Kissing Point Road, as well as Victoria Road and Wharf Road alongside the development of the new precinct.
Harvey said finalisation of the planning proposal will soon enable development applications to be lodged.
“Beyond this, planning is underway for the remaining areas of the Melrose Park precinct, that will result in up to 11,000 homes in the precinct.”
Developers active in Melrose Park have included Payce and Sekisui House Australia.
