A NEW $30 million affordable housing development was unveiled in Brisbane yesterday.
The project was launched by Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan and Housing Minister Tanya Plibersek.
The Brisbane Housing Company’s Newstead development is the largest housing project undertaken by a Queensland charity and the first time affordable housing and market for sale housing is being combined in an apartment building.
BHC CEO David Cant said the $30 million development would be a catalyst development for the future of affordable housing projects in Queensland and around Australia.
“We are creating a high quality product which will not only provide quality affordable housing options for low income households in one of Brisbane’s most exclusive suburbs, we will also be selling a portion of apartments to the private market.
“By creating mixed tenure developments of affordable and private for sale housing, we will normalise the concept of affordable housing, build communities which are rich and diverse, and help addressing the shortage of housing options,” he added.
Cant said the unprecedented investment in affordable housing by the Rudd Government, with support from the Queensland Government and the Brisbane City Council has meant more people will have access to affordable accommodation in Brisbane.
The building, comprises 95 units of high quality housing, featuring studios, one and two-bedrooms. The accommodation will have a 6 star EER green rating.
