THE Victorian government has released the East Werribee Opportunity Statement, in a new milestone for transforming the precinct that provides quality housing, economic activity and strong employment growth.
The statement reveals the state government’s plans for the East Werribee Precinct, focusing on its existing strengths in agriculture, manufacturing, energy and tourism.
Werribee is home to over 600ha of government-owned land, which was previously occupied by the State Research Farm.
“’The East Werribee Precinct will be a new centre for jobs and housing in Melbourne’s growing western corridor. A true mixed-use, urban precinct, it will provide traditional and emerging employment sectors alongside high-quality, sustainable and diverse dwellings,” read the statement.
Key advantages for East Werribee to become a thriving precinct for jobs and housing include its close proximity to existing town centres at Werribee and Hoppers Crossing, as well as regional attractions in the Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee Park and the Werribee River.
“We’re bringing the East Werribee Precinct to life, transforming it into a centre for employment and investment, surrounded by high-quality and sustainable housing and improved transport connections,” said Colin Brooks, minister for precincts.
Transport connections will be enhanced through the planned removal of three additional level crossings Wyndham and the completion of missing links along the Federation and Kororoit Creek trails.
While 2025 will see the opening of the Metro Tunnel, which will increase capacity on the Werribee and Williamstown lines throughout peak hours.
With the West Gate Tunnel will slash travel times between East Werribee and the Port of Melbourne.
“The East Werribee Opportunity Statement will transform the precinct and help unlock new business, employment and residential opportunities in one of Victoria’s fastest growing areas,” said Tim Pallas, member for Werribee.
The plan will also build on major investments in education and health, such as the expansion of the emergency department at Werribee Mercy Hospital.
“East Werribee’s ongoing development is bringing more jobs closer to home, a great outcome for our growing community,” said Mat Hilakari, member for Point Cook.
