The $47 million retail component will comprise a supermarket, speciality shops, cafes, restaurants and fitness offerings, with plans unveiled for more than six retailers and a range of A-Grade commercial office accommodation at the Tonsley Innovation District.
“The new Tonsley retail and commercial precinct is a gamechanger for the community, providing residents with a range of options, including a supermarket, a café and delicatessen, a barber and more,” said Brendan Gore, managing director and CEO of Peet.
“Access to amenity like this is key to building self-contained communities and improving the quality of life which has been a goal of Tonsley Village.”
The new hub was announced in the wake of Peet securing its first tenants, with a major commitment from Junction and Women’s Housing Ltd (Junction), and development approval for the first stage of the new precinct from the City of Marion.
Junction is set to develop the southern site of the precinct, which will see plans lodged for approval in the coming months, moving its head office and 150 workers to the new site.
“For commercial users, it offers a world class building focussed on health and wellbeing at the heart of the Tonsley Innovation District. The new facilities are another step forward and is part of our long-term commitment to supporting the continued growth and success of the Tonsley Innovation District,” said Gore.

While the first stage of the precinct is set to be delivered by boutique developer, Otello, who focus on mixed-use precinct scale developments.
“Otello are very excited to be working alongside Peet to deliver such an important project. Our shared project vision is for the Tonsley mixed-use precinct to become a world class, wellbeing focussed commercial and retail hub,” said Daniel Harris, managing director of Otello.
The southern site will also see a new 5,700sqm four-level office building developed, which will also include retail, food and beverage and health and wellbeing offerings.
“By allocating space for a major investment in lifestyle amenities we are building on the vibrancy already created within the District and unlocking new employment opportunities for hundreds of South Australians,” said Nick Champion, minister for housing and urban development.
Champion noted that the progress made at Tonsley Innovation District in the 10 years since it was conceived to replace the jobs lost with the closure of the Mitsubishi plant.
