CONSTRUCTION is now underway on NorthWest’s $52 million integrated cancer centre and research hub in Sydney’s fast growing Campbelltown.
The centre is set to be part of the larger innovative green healthcare precinct set to open on a circa 28,000sqm Campbelltown site in 2023, in a partnership between the Campbelltown City Council, GenesisCare, Erilyan and the site-owner, the NorthWest-managed Vital Healthcare Property Trust.
“This development will expand the capacity of our local health and cancer care services, building upon the great work already being done in the public sector and increasing the availability of important treatments, therapies and global clinical trials,” said George Greiss, mayor of Campbelltown.
Offering greater access the latest advancements in radiation oncology, medical oncology, and said global clinical trials to patients in South Western Sydney and the Southern Highlands, the former of which is estimated to see a population boom of an estimated 500,000 new residents over the next 30 years.
“Increased local services will reduce the burden of travel on residents during what is an especially difficult and stressful time in their lives. This is a great investment for our city that will provide local high-value jobs in the heart of our city centre and ensure long-term financial returns on Council land that can be reinvested into our community,” added Greiss.
While hundreds of jobs will be generated throughout construction, the centre will upon completion generate 60 long-term healthcare jobs and will have the capacity to deliver more than 30,000 treatments each year.
The 4,473sqm centre will also be built with an emphasis on sustainability, with both the new centre and the broader precinct obtaining a 5 Star Green Star Rating, as well as being surrounded by green open spaces.
“A core expertise of NorthWest’s business is in sourcing, planning and delivering market-leading healthcare precincts that service critical community needs on a large scale,” said Alex Belcastro, senior vice president of medical precincts at NorthWest Health Properties.
“The Campbelltown site, a high-profile site in a central location with proximity to Western Sydney University, the Campbelltown CBD and soon, the new cancer centre operated by GenesisCare, will maximise the value of the healthcare services offered to the broader community.”
The centre is also well-placed for accessibility with Narellan Road and the M5 within close proximity for patients travelling to and from the wider region.
Throughout the construction phase, more than 740 local sub-contractors will be employed to deliver the project.
The Canadian NorthWest Healthcare Properties in March announced a further $2.4 billion injection into its Australian healthcare real estate joint venture with Singaporean sovereign wealth fund GIC, bringing total commitments to over $6 billion.
