THE $230 million redevelopment of the Goulburn Valley Health’s Shepparton Hospital is wrapping up, with the hospital’s new emergency department now fully operational.
The redeveloped hospital is being delivered in partnership by Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Goulburn Valley Health and will provide better access to world-class emergency care and facilities for families in the region.
“This major redevelopment and expansion are about making sure people in Shepparton and across the Goulbourn Valley have access to the best possible care, close to home,” said Mary-Anne Thomas, minister for health.
The upgrade has doubled the capacity of the emergency department, which now has 44 treatment spaces and nine short stay beds, as well as up to date technology with two new x-ray rooms, a CT scan room and ultrasound room.
The works also include a new five-storey inpatient tower with ten ICU beds, 64 inpatient beds and four operating theatres, as well as a single-storey 16-chair dialysis unit, 12-bed maternity unit, birthing suite, special care nursery and paediatric ward.
The upgraded and expanded maternity unit and birthing suite enables Goulburn Valley residents to give birth closer to home.
With the new 10-cot special care nursery including the latest technology and specially trained staff delivering the best care to newborns.
“We’ve doubled the emergency department, delivered a new inpatient tower and upgraded maternity and paediatric care – so locals can get the care they need, close to home – no matter their condition or age,” added Thomas.
Final works are still underway on the refurbishment of existing theatres and support spaces at the hospital.
“The new, bigger and better Shepparton Hospital is putting families first with the best facilities – and we are getting on and delivering the new early parenting centre,” said Jaclyn Symes, member for Northern Victoria.
Supporting the hospital, the state government is also investing $25 million to build a state-of-the-art Early Parenting Centre in Shepparton.
With the Victorian government’s investment into the healthcare system and its workers now totalling more than $158 billion.
Works winding up at the Shepparton Hospital redevelopment follows the structural completion of the first three buildings of the new Footscray Hospital, with the $1.5 billion project set to be Victoria’s biggest-health infrastructure project to date.
