PROPERTY young gun Mohan Du has scored a major coup in securing Marriott to open a new hotel at the Harbour Town shopping centre in Melbourne’s Docklands.
Du’s company Capital Alliance signed a deal with the hotelier to bring the first new-build Marriott hotel to Australia in almost 20 years.
The hotel will be part of a mixed-use development at Waterfront Way atop Harbour Town shopping centre, Waterfront City.
The $250 million development, which is subject to planning approvals, proposes approximately 200 hotel rooms and 260 residential apartments across 36 levels.
Du, who was recently received the ISPT Young Achiever of the Year Award at the Australian Property Institute Excellence in Property Awards for his achievements in the industry at a young age, said the Marriott project will be a boost for Melbourne and international tourism.
“We are extremely proud to be able to deliver yet another hotel project to Melbourne. We believe that mixed-use developments are the right direction for development in our city and provide the stimuli Docklands needs to flourish.
“Our vision is to deliver a hotel and apartment project that will be celebrated and draw tourists both internationally and locally to the area,” he said.
Marriott International Asia Pacific COO Raj Menon said Melbourne is fast becoming one of the most popular travel destinations throughout the world.
“The vibrant culinary scene and unique culture makes this property an ideal addition to our Australian portfolio of properties. Australia will continue to be a vital part of our growth strategy and the Marriott brand will continue with further expansion in 2016,” he added.
The new Marriott hotel would be the second hotel to be constructed by Capital Alliance in Docklands, with the five star M Docklands currently under construction.
Marriott International’s regional vice president hotel developer James Doolan said Capital Alliance has quickly established a track record of high-quality projects in
Melbourne.
“The hotel product will be exceptional and the rooftop infinity pool is going to be a unique experience in Melbourne. As the first new-build Marriott hotel in Australia for some time, we look forward to showcasing a number of recent innovations,” Doolan said.
Places Victoria’s general manager precinct Simon Wilson said the Marriott hotel would be a welcome addition to the emerging hotel offer in Docklands.
