VICINITY Centres has begun its revitalisation works at Box Hill Central, in the first stage of transforming the shopping centre into an integrated mixed-use precinct.
With 10,00sqm of ground floor retail, as well as car park lobby areas in the south shopping precinct, Vicinity is looking to bring new hospitality, fresh food and speciality ingredients to Box Hill.
“The redevelopment of Box Hill Central will elevate the centre and includes new facades, floors, ceilings, furniture and lighting providing a pleasant environment for our community to visit their favourite and new retailers,” said Natalie Kyall, manager of the Box Hill Centre.
The redevelopment will place great emphasis on improving access to the centre, boosting engagement with the existing street network through a new southern entry point on Carrington Road.
“We’ve also analysed the way customers move around our centre and we’re reconfiguring the southern retail precinct to improve accessibility, including a new entrance way and the introduction of dual-frontage restaurants,” added Kyall.
Further points of access to be introduced will include three new travelators and a new customer lift that will connect each level of the car park, accommodating the expected one million visitors per year.
The centre will also see its layout reconfigured to allow for new kiosks and the expansion of its internal avenue to add three new permanent retail stores.
In addition to a new Coles supermarket on the site, which is scheduled to open in mid-2022, upgrades will include a range of new and specialty retailers, with new dual frontage restaurants on Carrington Road, furthering engagement.
“Most of the works will take place outside of trading hours, and will be completed in stages concluding with the launch of new restaurants in September 2022,” said Kyall.
Vicinity will also carry out the development of three new levels of commercial office space above the centre, with a dedicated entrance.
The group also plans to develop additional mixed-use buildings, including residential, commercial and office space in Box Hill North. The new sites will also include ground floor retail and will built alongside new public open space in the suburb.
