A 50 tonne roof rafter of the disaster prone Wembley Stadium collapsed late last night (Sydney time) with thousands of workers being evacuated.
Workers on the Wembley Stadium reportedly heard an enormous bang before a 30 metre section of the roof collapsed.
No one was injured in the incident. Multiplex confirmed engineers were investigating the problem.
According to a union spokesman, workers heard the bang prior to a piece of rafter falling while it was being welded.
More than 3000 workers were evacuated.
Last month, the Football Association moved the 13 May FA Cup soccer final to Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, because Multiplex could not guarantee Wembley would be ready.
The construction has been a disaster for Mutliplex and its shareholders who have seen its share price drop from $6.15 in February 2005 to yesterday’s close of $3.20.
A number of law firms, including Slater & Gordon, remain active in the marketplace seeking clients for a class action against Multiplex directors.
It is believed Multiplex will lose more than $200 million on the project.
In January 2004, one construction worker was killed and another injured at the site when scaffolding collapsed and dropped some 33 metres.
