STOCKLAND has received the green light for its Whiteman Edge Town Centre, which will become its fifth shopping centre in Western Australia.
The approval at state and local levels comes two months after the development giant paid $91 million for three sites across Perth that will bolster its footprint across the city by around 4,6000 residential lots.
The new centre, within the $495 million Whiteman Edge masterplanned community in Perth’s north-east suburb of Brabham, will comprise a full-line supermarket, 15 specialties, medical centre and childcare centre on Youle Dean Road.
The first stage of works is on the centre is expected to bring 350 jobs during construction and more than 300 retail and service jobs in future. There are 2,800 residents currently living within the community, a figure expected to double in the coming year.
“The proposed Whiteman Edge Town Centre will allow us to provide much needed retail amenity and employment opportunities, with the opportunity to expand the size, scale and offering as the community and region grows in the future,” John Schroder, Stockland group executive and chief executive officer commercial property said.
Stockland has also received approval for the Brabham Activity Centre Plan, allowing for expansion of the centre to 30,000 sqm in future with growth of the surrounding community.
As part of its recent land purchase, Stockland picked up an additional 11 hectares in Brabham for $11 million.
It also bought 40 hectares in Sinagra for $53 million and 334 hectares in Baldivis for $27 million, north and south of the city respectively.
“We’ve seen early signs of improved economic conditions in WA, particularly in Perth, and this additional land will enable us to plan for three new liveable, affordable residential communities over the long term,” Stockland’s group executive Andrew Whitson said.
Whiteman Edge is located at the gateway to the Swan Valley wine region and will eventually comprise 2,000 homes.
In the middle of last year, the Western Australian government selected local companies Peet and Perron Group as development partners on a 220-hectare housing project in Brabham, which would potentially yield more than 3,000 dwellings, schools, neighbourhood shops and recreational area.
