CBUS Property and Charter Hall have received triple crown on their 171 Collins Street development, with the property becoming the first in Australia to achieve all three 6 star NABERS ratings.
The premium-grade commercial asset, located at 171 Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD, has been awarded 6 NABERS ratings for Energy, Indoor Environment and Waste, becoming the only Australian building to achieve this.
“The triple-crown achievement powerfully demonstrates there are always ongoing opportunities to enhance a buildings performance via long-term vision, active partnerships and strategic asset management,” said Carmel Hourigan, office CEO of Charter Hall.
“171 Collins Street now sets a new standard for sustainable workplaces that deliver positive environmental outcomes, and better-quality work environments for tenant customers,” added Hourigan.
Back in 2013 upon its completion, the building achieved a 5 Star NABERS Energy rating, but with the joint venture broad approach to sustainability, this energy rating was lifted.
171 Collins Street also currently has a 5 Star NABERS Water rating and 5 Star Green Star Performance Rating.
“Health and wellbeing are a primary focus for Cbus Property, and what 171 Collins Street has done for a number of years now is deliver superior indoor environmental quality standards to benefit our tenants,” said Adrian Pozzo, CEO of Cbus Property.
In 2019, the Collins Street property was the first office tower in the country to achieve a 6 star NABERS Waste rating, which was re-instated in 2020. The building had a 74% recycling rate for consecutive 12-month periods.
“Partnering with our tenants, including BHP and Evans & Partners, the asset management team was able to implement a variety of innovative waste measures, which have been embraced throughout the building,” said Hourigan.
The property is also being powered entirely by renewable sources, with Cbus Property’s involvement in the City of Melbourne’s second Melbourne Renewable Energy Project.
“I had the fortune to visit 171 Collins in 2019, where I witnessed first-hand all the work the team was doing to simultaneously reach three different 6 star NABERS ratings. This raises the bar on how sustainable buildings can perform today, setting the tone for the kind of change we need to make progress on our climate goals throughout the next decade,” said Carlos Flores, director at NABERS.
