Construction of new City of London skyscraper 22 Bishopsgate, which totals 1.4m sq ft, has now recommenced after contractor Multiplex had orginaly downed tools in response to the government’s coronavirus restrictions.
Yesterday, Multiplex said it had restarted “limited and essential” woks on the 1.4m sq ft office tower along with three other key residential projects.
The contractor announced on 23 March it had temporarily shut all its UK sites due to coronavirus restrictions. Works will resume with reduced labour and resources in line with government recommendations.
AXA IM – Real Assets is developing 22 Bishopsgate on behalf of PSP Investments, Temasek, and British Columbia Pension Fund, with Lipton Rogers Developments retained as developer. Tenants have already committed to over 800,000 sq ft of space, with completion pencilled in July and occupiers expecting to move in towards the end of the year.
A spokesperson for Multiplex said: “Following the decision to temporarily close all our sites on 23 March, each project team has worked collaboratively with their respective clients and supply chain to assess whether and how limited and essential works should be planned and recommended.
“These limited works will only recommence on sites where it is possible to do so safely, based on close scrutiny of all relevant information by Multiplex’s senior team and following further consultation with our clients, supply chain, and the individuals in the workforce involved.”
