SUPERMARKET chain Aldi has outlined a $700 million plan to open up to 120 stores and distribution centres in Western Australia and South Australia.
Aldi got the ball rolling by appointing Badge in SA and Georgio Group in WA to construction its distribution centres, with a combined value of over $100 million.
Giorgio Group will build the distribution centre at Jandakot Airport. Construction will commence from November and is expected to be completed by Easter 2016.
“As one of Australia’s fastest growing retailers, it is essential that we work with high calibre contractors and suppliers who can develop a distribution centre at Jandakot Airport that not only meets our stringent specifications and standards, but shares our vision for innovation and efficiency,” Aldi WA managing director said Viktor Jakupec said.
Jakupec added that the distribution centre would act as the hub for Aldi’s store network, with up to 70 stores planned for WA.
“ALDI continues to actively seek suitable sites and has committed to several store locations in WA including Cannington, Southern River, Halls Head, Kwinana, Rockingham, Australind, South Lake, Joondalup, Camillo, Midland, Mundaring and Ellenbrook. The first stores are planned to open by mid-2016,” he continued.
Georgiou Group general manager building Frank Dilizia said the company was very pleased to have been selected.
“We have worked hard in the past several months to develop innovative, cost competitive and energy efficient solutions for the project and we look forward to working closely with Aldi,” he added.
In SA, Badge will build Aldi’s distribution centre at Regency Park. Construction will start later this month and is expected to be completed by October 2015.
“We identified the Aldi project some time ago as being a perfect fit for our skillset and worked through the tender period to provide the best design and construct solution for Aldi,” Badge managing director Jim Whiting said.
Aldi is expecting to open up to 50 stores in SA. Jakupec said it has committed to several store sites including Seaford Heights, Kilburn, Parafield Gardens, Blakeview, Hallett Cove, Woodcroft, Gilles Plains, Salisbury, Modbury, St Agnes and Noarlunga.
The first stores are planned to open by early 2016.
