THE state government of NSW will invest $1.15 billion into the Bradfield City Centre, bringing a boost of thousands of jobs to Western Sydney.
The funding will kickstart works on the centre, which sits within close proximity of the new Western Sydney International Airport.
“We have named the new Aerotropolis city, Bradfield, and now work is set to begin to turn what is essentially a paddock today into a thriving global city centre,” said Premier Gladys Berejiklian.
The precinct is predicted to support as many as 17,600 skilled jobs, for the eventual aerotropolis city.
$975.5 million of the funding will go towards establishing, remediating and allowing site access to around 100-hectares of land.
Bradfield is set to become a key economic hub in the Indo-Pacific region, offering international investment opportunities in manufacturing, aerospace and defence, agri-business, pharma, freight and logistics, health and education.
“Bradfield City will be the next jewel in Sydney’s crown and we’re putting in the groundwork to deliver an iconic city that will unlock new economic opportunities, particularly for the people of Western Sydney,” said Dominic Perrottet, NSW treasurer.
It is hoped that the precinct will underpin economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, both within the state and across the whole of Australia.
“The pandemic has shown us the importance of investing in our own backyard and this investment will create a precinct that will be home to businesses and industries that will create jobs not just today, but into the future as well,” added Perrottet.
$138.2 million of the government funding will be used to establish the city centre’s first building, which will include a $24.9 million high-tech facility. The facility will be home to $22.9 million of equipment for collaboration between research institutions and industry.
Also using this $138.2 million will be the establishment of a four-year pilot of the New Education and Training Model (NETM).
“The NETM is a new model of tertiary education aimed at helping advanced industries access skilled labour. We are dedicating $37.4 million to the program over five years to provide more than 7,000 courses for almost 3,000 students,” said Stuart Ayres, minister for jobs, investment, tourism and Western Sydney.
