THE Porter family is bringing to a close a century of ownership of 1,654 hectares of south east South Australian farmland, tipping it to the market with hopes of $23 million.
The mixed farming enterprise Childerley Park, 10 kilometres from Naracoorte, has a long history of being utilised as a grazing enterprise for both sheep and cattle, with the family running 4,500 ewes and 240 Angus-cross cows. Along with finishing stock, the plains country also supports cereals, beans and canola production, and several paddocks can be used to grow hay.
The Porter family also owns 1,000-hectare property Bundalong at Coonawarra, 40 kilometres south of Naracoorte, where it has run 3,500 ewes and planted 70 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grapes for their Bundalong brand.
“The sale of Childerley Park will enable us to consolidate our agricultural, horticultural and viticultural interests in the Coonawarra,” said James Porter, farm manager at Childerley Park.
Water comes from a 43-hectare centre pivot and a 259 megalitre allocation. The underground water is also utilised for stock, with a series of solar pumps and an electric pump filling satellite tanks via 32 millimetre and 50 millimetre poly line.
Infrastructure includes a four-stand raised board woolshed with upgraded sheep yards and cattle yards, and there is a workshop and implement shed with chemical storage, hay shed and grain storage.
“The sale of the property represents an opportunity to secure scale and balance of land rarely offered in the Naracoorte area. A true mixed farming enterprise,” selling agents Tom Pearce and Mark DeGaris of TDC Livestock and Property say in the listing.
Childerley Park boasts a recently renovated five-bedroom stone homestead, surrounded by private grounds, while there is an upgraded three-bedroom cottage with one and a half bathrooms.
