BROOKFIELD Multiplex has taken the mantle as the top construction company in Australia with $6.10 billion worth of contracts won, according to the HIA-Cordell survey.
Brookfield Multiplex just beat Laing O’Rourke which won $6.02 billion worth of contracts.
John Holland trailed in third with $3.72 billion followed by Probuild with $2.27 billion and BGC Australia with $1.90 billion.
In the commercial property sector, Brookfield Multiplex won a bulk of the work with $2.36 billion – ahead of the runner up BGC Australia with $779 million.
Brookfield Multiplex and Probuild were Australia’s most active apartment builders, winning $1.74 billion and $1.60 billion respectively.
Meanwhile Laing O’Rourke won the most civil engineering work with $5.08 billion ahead of second John Holland’s $2.69 billion.
“While growth in non-mining related construction would have to accelerate markedly if it were to fully offset the decline in mining-related activity, construction undertaken by non-mining sectors has picked up – most notably in apartment building,” HIA chief economist Harley Dale said.
“While it is good to see the construction industry is navigating the transition away from mining dominated activity reasonably well, to date it has primarily been the resurgence of the residential sector doing the heavy lifting.
“The sustainability of this relatively smooth transition now hinges on a broadening of the mix of construction work across more sectors of the economy, and there are tentative signs that this may be on the horizon,” Dale concluded.
