THE Victorian state government has appointed Birchmore to deliver the four remaining Wodonga sites in Australia’s largest regional urban renewal initiative.
Birchmore will transform sites 1, 3, 4 and 5 at Junction Place, delivering short stay accommodation, a combination of mixed-use and residential developments, which will include the delivery of approximately 200 homes.
The inclusion of short stay accommodation comes shortly after the Victorian government introduced its Short Stay Levy Bill 2024 to Parliament.
“Our vision for Junction Place is to create a new Precinct in the heart of Wodonga where people will visit, live, work and share their experiences for generations to come,” said Andrew Peters, managing director at Birchmore.
The development will support over 1,000 local jobs and boost Wodonga’s economic growth.
“More homes means more opportunity – that’s why we’re unlocking surplus government land to deliver more homes close to work, transport, education and services in Wodonga,” said Colin Brooks, minister for development.
Over $30 million already been invested by the Victorian and federal governments to restore and transform Junction Place’s historic railway station and goods shed.
The station and shed will be repurposed into restaurants and cafes and delivered public spaces including the Promenade, Junction Square, Sidings Park and Richardson Park.
“Through the redevelopment of Junction Place, we’re delivering more homes, jobs and open space for the community in Wodonga to enjoy,” said Jaclyn Symes, member for Northern Victoria.
Birchmore will now progress with the next phase of the project, though it is still subject to planning approvals.
Development Victoria is expected to announce the decision of their appointment process for site 2 later this year.
